Croque Monsieur
Indulge in a classic Croque Monsieur, a cheesy ham delight that’s irresistibly crispy and creamy!
Ingredients
- 16 slices white sandwich bread
- 8 slices cooked ham
- 300 g grated gruyère
- 80 g butter
- 40 g plain flour
- 6 dl milk
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 pinch grated nutmeg
How to make it
- Preheat the oven to 220 C. Melt 40 g of the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, stir in the flour, and cook for 1 minute until the mixture looks foamy and pale gold.
- Whisk in the milk little by little until the sauce is smooth and thick, then simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring, until it coats the spoon. Season with the salt, black pepper, and grated nutmeg.
- Spread the remaining butter on one side of all 16 slices of bread. Lay 8 slices, buttered side down, on a work surface, top each with 1 slice of ham and a generous layer of gruyère, then close with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
- Set the sandwiches on a baking tray and spoon a thin layer of the béchamel over the top slices. Scatter the remaining gruyère over the sauce so the tops are well covered.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and melted. Finish under the hot grill for 1 to 2 minutes until the tops are spotted deep gold and the edges are crisp.
- Let the sandwiches rest for 2 minutes, then cut each one in half on the diagonal and serve 2 halves per person, stacked on a plain plate with the browned top facing up.
